The Next Phase: A Theme Emerges
The next phase in my collector journey is to get thematic. Not because I’m following the advice of YouTubers who tell new collectors to pick a theme and stick with it.I’m not very compliant when it comes to advice about what my taste or opinions should be. Nor am I lead along by the general consensus of worth or usability in my tools or collections.
However, I currently have a weakness for black and orange, even though I’m not a fan of Hallowe’en. I like both shiny black (think onyx) and bright orange (think camping tent), and those two colors together really catch my eye. When you go one more step and do the full celluloid treatment, I find some of these pens hard to resist. Which goes a long way toward explaining why I’d buy either of the pens in the picture above; the Gullor from Jinhao and the Conklin Duragraph Orange Nights.
This vision of a theme doesn’t mean a pen needs to contain both glass black and bright orange in view. I have enough glossy black pens that balancing them out with a few simply gorgeous orange beauties would only be fair. Bearing that in mind, I’m building a list of thirteen pens (beyond my grail pen test list) to search for, save for, or put on a gift list.
Jinhao Gullor Celluloid Orange
I already have this pen. Yay! I’ve started my Themed collection.Conklin Duragraph Orange Nights
Got this one, but had to return it. Nib was wrecked.- Montblanc Meisterstück 146 Black Resin
Well, every collection should have one of these. It isn’t called Le Grand for nothing. - Pelikan M200 Orange Delight
Clear orange and gold demonstrator version of a great pen. Conklin Endura Deco Crest Orange
I’m not that into this brand, really, but this one is a beauty. A glossy black skeleton with marbled orange inside!- Caran d’Ache 849 Orange
Luxury brand, but this one is in a reasonable price range. - Delta Dolcevita Black and Orange
Expensive Italian brand, but these can still be found on eBay for reasonable prices. - Parker Duofold Lucky Curve Orange
The forerunner of the Parker Big Red pens of the 1970s. I was in Junior High when Big Red was the rage. Totally Mod. Benu Talisman Foxglove
I keep looking at this pen and it is a show stopper beauty. Schmidt nib means it should be a good writer, too.- Piguet L’Orange
Huge pen, French name, made in Turkey? Did I mention it was huge? - Leonardo Momento Magico in DNA Black and Orange
Do I have to sing “This magic moment” while using it? And what makes it “DNA”, actually? Is DNA orange? - Pineider Metropolis Orange
I’ve never heard of the brand, never mind the pen, but that makes it sound special. - Laban Solar Orange
Looks aluminum, but a very interesting shape. And the knurled chrome writing grip looks industrial grade.
